School’s Out Bash – Drayton Christian School 2024
Every once in a while I get to point my cameras at something that matters to me personally. The School’s Out Bash at Drayton Christian School in Drayton Valley, Alberta is one of those projects.
This wasn’t a commercial video production job. I volunteered my time to film the event because my own child attends the school and because DCS is part of the community my family calls home.
After more than 25 years working in professional video production, I still enjoy projects where the goal is simply to preserve a moment and tell a story well. Sometimes that means a corporate interview or a brand story. Other times it means kids running across a school field, teachers laughing with students, parents visiting and a community getting together at the end of another school year.
Filming a School Event in Drayton Valley
Event videography is different from a controlled corporate production. You don’t get to stop the action, ask everyone to move back into position and shoot it again. Most of the best moments happen once.
That means staying mobile, watching what is happening around you and trying to anticipate where the next good moment will come from. With a school event like this, I wanted the camera to feel like another person in the crowd rather than something interrupting the day.
The goal was to create a short school event highlight video that captured what the afternoon actually felt like rather than turning it into something overly staged or polished.
What I Wanted the Video to Capture
The big activities are easy to film. What interests me just as much are the moments between them: teachers high-fiving kids, families talking together, students laughing with friends and the little reactions that disappear almost as quickly as they happen.
Those details are often what make a good event video feel real.
I have always believed good video production is less about showing off the camera and more about knowing where to point it. Gear matters. Lighting matters. Editing matters. But none of those things replace paying attention to people and recognizing a moment when it happens.
A Simple Run-and-Gun Video Production
I kept the production lightweight and mobile. Natural light did most of the work, with enough camera movement to give the finished video energy without making the filming itself the centre of attention.
That style is something I use regularly for event video production, documentary-style filming and corporate storytelling throughout Edmonton, Drayton Valley and Central Alberta. A smaller camera footprint lets me react quickly and often helps people forget about the camera altogether.
In post-production I kept the edit moving, cleaned up the colour and built the piece around the natural energy of the day. The finished video is short enough to share easily while still giving families and the school something they can look back on.
Why Community Video Still Matters
A video like this probably won’t ever be the biggest production I work on, but that doesn’t make it insignificant.
Twenty years from now the buildings may look different. The students will be adults. Teachers will have retired and families will have moved on. But for a couple of minutes, video can bring people back to what that day looked and felt like.
That is one of the things I still love about this work. Whether I am creating a company profile video, client testimonial, interview, event film or community story, the camera gives us a way to hold onto moments that otherwise disappear.
